For those in the know, Queen’s Ball is Queensland’s premier LGBTIQ+ event. No other gala within our south-east Queensland community matches it in terms of its recognition of those who are dedicated to LGBTIQa+ causes, or its prestige.
Attendees mingle with elected representatives (including the Deputy Premier, Lord Mayor and a raft of other representatives from all facets of politics), leaders in our community, and some of our brightest LGBTIQ+ performers. The event is black tie and evening wear, or you can dress to the theme and be as outrageous or as modest as you please.
Guests enjoy a generous drinks package and two-course meal while the awards are presented. Performances by local artists also keep the crowd entertained during the evening, followed by a live band to get you bustin’ moves (watch me whi-whip, watch me ne-ne).
So you want to come along and never been before? Here are Brisbane Pride’s top five tips for getting the most out of the Queen’s Ball experience.
Book a table early to secure spots with your friends.
You book tickets for Queen’s Ball either as full tables or as individuals. Booking a whole table is your best bet of getting the best seat and sitting with all your friends…if that’s something you’re worried about. If you’re up for mingling, individual tickets are a great way to enjoy the night and leave with some new buddies.
Individual tickets can be bought in small groups, whereas tables come in groups of ten. You can grab your tickets here.
Check out which awards will be presented on the night and get your vote in.
The Queen’s Ball Awards are the most prestigious awards for the Brisbane and South-East Queensland LGBTIQA+ community. They’re nominated by the general public and the community decides on the winners through a public vote.
Check out the awards categories and nominees here. It’s a great way to discover who is making a difference in our community, and they won’t be strangers to you when they’re up on stage.
Think about what you’re going to wear well in advance.
Black-tie or to the theme, that’s Queen’s Ball’s dress code. This is your chance to dress to impress. Black tie is pretty straight forward.
But remember, we’re a gender fluid mob so don’t feel like you have to wear a dress if you’re a gal or a suit if you’re a guy. Or if you’re somewhere in between wear what you feel comfortable in.
Our number one tip is that there’s no such thing as overdressing for Queen’s Ball.
Interpret the theme however you want to!
This year’s theme celebrates the 55th anniversary of the Queen’s Ball. That’s more than half a century. That’s a pretty big deal. In fact, it makes QB one of the longest, continuously running LGBTIQA+ events anywhere in the world.
A 55th anniversary is called an emerald anniversary…emerald…Emerald City…Wizard of Oz…Now you’re up to speed on how we came up with The Road to Emerald City as our theme. Go wild or mild – it’s up to you! I myself am going to the whole hog and have a costume made! Check out our Instagram – @brisbanepride – for some costume inspiration.
Queen’s Ball is a judgement free zone.
Above all else, the Queen’s Ball is a celebration of how the LGBTIQA+ community comes together to celebrate our differences.Everyone is welcome. Embrace that and it can one of the most inspiring events you will ever attend.
We’re busting to celebrate this massive milestone – 55-years strong, your attendance at this event will help mark this occasion for history.
